Dr. Cosey-Gay is a Co-Investigator with the University of Chicago “Harmonizing Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Programs with a Novel Medical-Legal Partnership for Equity in the Social and Structural Determinants of Health” project and a member of the Community Firearm Violence Prevention Steering Committee.

Franklin Cosey-Gay is the Director of the University of Chicago’s Medicine’s Violence Recovery Program (VRP) which helps trauma patients and their families by providing everything from wraparound care, crisis intervention, psychological first aid, social support, case management and connection to community-based social services. Launched in 2018 when the South Side health system opened its Level 1 adult trauma center, the VRP engages patients and families at a critical time when they’re in immediate crisis, supporting them as they navigate a complex system in the days, weeks and months after an injury when research shows they are at higher risk of being re-injured or injuring someone themselves. Dr. Cosey-Gay emphasizes a comprehensive approach to reducing violence, working in coordination and collaboration with community partners, researchers and experts in the field.
