Dr. Sandra McKay is a Co-Principal Investigator for the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston project “Incorporation of a Health Approach to Hospital Violence Intervention Programs: The Integration of a Community and Hospital Based Initiatives to Reduce Gun Violence in a Large Metropolitan Area.” She is a member of 1. Steering Committee, 2. Policy, Implementation and Economics, and 3. Communication and Dissemination workgroups for the Community Firearm Violence Prevention Network.
Sandra McKay, MD FAAP is a general pediatrician and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). She graduated medical school from the University of Missouri-Columbia and completed her residency at Saint Louis University (SLU)/Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Dr. McKay is the Vice Chair for Advocacy and the Director of Population Health for the Department of Pediatrics and the principal investigator for the Injury Free Coalition for Kids Houston site. She has innovated undergraduate and graduate medical education advocacy curricula relating to poverty and firearm secure storage counseling within the clinical encounter as well as working with firearm retailers to create coalitions to reduce injury in Texas. Along with her co-PI Dr. Alex Testa, they are leading a hospital based violence intervention program, which will serve as a comparative effectiveness randomized controlled trial investigating different levels of community based interventions aimed at reducing recidivism.
