Vanessa R. Schick, PhD is an Associate Professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health in the Department of Management, Policy and Community Health. Her research is driven by the needs of the community with a focus on the health and wellness of historically disenfranchised populations, including those with experiences of criminal justice involvement, homelessness and/or sex work (with an emphasis on survival sex work). Much of her work centers the experiences of sexual and gender minoritized individuals with a focus on bisexuality. In working with multiple historically disenfranchised communities, reports and experiences of violence (including firearm violence) are often indicated as a priority need in her work. Since earning her doctorate in applied social psychology, Dr. Schick has made many contributions to the field, including serving as Principal Investigator on multiple federal, state and local grants with most focused on supporting individuals with experiences of homelessness and justice involvement. These include community-based interventions focused on reducing viral hepatitis among those living in low-income housing and preventing homelessness among those exiting emergency departments. One of her most recent projects focuses on causes of mortality among individuals in low-income housing, including firearm violence.
